NPA Donates ₦200m to Support Borno Flood Victims

In a significant humanitarian gesture, the management and staff of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have extended their support to the victims of the recent devastating floods in Borno State. The NPA donated a sum of ₦200 million to aid recovery efforts for the affected communities. In a letter signed by NPA Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, the authority expressed solidarity with the people of Borno, acknowledging the severe impact of the floods on lives and livelihoods.

World Maritime Day: We Will Embrace Global Safety Standards – Oyetola

Nigeria is set to join the rest of the world to commemorate the 2024 World Maritime Day with the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First”. Speaking ahead of the event, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that its agencies operate in accordance with globally recognized standards. “This year’s theme for World Maritime Day is particularly relevant, as safety is a fundamental prerequisite for achieving a robust and business-friendly maritime sector. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is dedicated to ensuring that the Blue Economy makes a significant contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)”, Oyetola said.

Maritime expert warns against shortage of 96,000 seafarers in Nigeria by 2026

Nigeria may experience a shortfall of ninety- six thousand seafarers would be experienced in its maritime sector in the year 2026, if urgent measures were not to correct the imbalance. Giving this warning at the 2024 Lecture Series of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron, Akwa – Ibom state titled, “Addressing Human and Institutional Capacity Development in Nigeria’s Maritime Sector Through Stakeholders Partnership” a maritime expert, Capt. Konni Duniya expressed concern that the country will suffer huge shortage of adequate and competent seafarers in the coming years if the manpower gap created as a result of war, retirement and disruptions in the sector is not urgently addressed.

$3.5bn Bakassi Deep Seaport Construction To Begin Soon – ICRC

Dr Jobson Ewalefoh, the Director-General of Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has said that the construction of the 3.5 billion dollar Bakassi Deep Seaport would soon commence. This is contained in a statement issued by Ifeanyi Nwoko, ICRC’s Acting Head of Media and Publicity in Abuja. Ewalefoh made this known at a High-level Stakeholders’ meeting where a statement of endorsement for the port project was signed. The ICRC D-G who said the construction would commence under the administration of Gov. Bassey Otu of Cross River State, assured that the project would be completed in record time.

WCO, German Federation Train Nigeria Customs Officers, Others on Arms Detection

The World Customs Organisation (WCO), in partnership with the German Federation, has successfully conducted a five-day training on small arms and light weapons detection for Nigeria Customs Service officers and the Nigerian Police Force. The training, which was held between 16 to 20 September 2024 at the Old Secretariat, Garki, Abuja, aimed to strengthen the skills of 25 Customs officers alongside two personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Army in arms detection and security protocols.
