The Nigerian Shippers’ Council, NSC, and the Federal Road Safety Corp, FRSC, have reaffirmed their commitment to work together to ensure safety of cargoes and vehicles on the highways through standardisation of haulage operations. It would be recalled that the two agencies entered a Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, in 2017 to proffer solutions to the incessant accidents on the highways and the challenges hindering seamless evacuation of cargoes from the seaports to the hinterlands.

As a result of the lingering fuel scarcity and the absence of floating fuel stations, boat operators have been forced to resort to buying fuel in generator tanks, to avoid being arrested by the Police, for allegedly engaging in illegal bunkering and smuggling. This is even as boat operators in Lagos have raised alarm over indiscriminate arrests of their members for purchasing fuel in jerry cans. The boat operators’ frustration stems from the lack of floating fuel stations or any other convenient means to purchase fuel for their operations.

Senegal’s navy says it has found 17 more bodies from a boat carrying refugees and migrants that sank off the West African country, raising the death toll to 26. In a post on X, the navy said that it had recovered “17 lifeless bodies” after nine people were initially announced dead following the shipwreck off the western town of Mbour. The search is ongoing, the navy said. Many of the vessel’s passengers remain missing. The boat – a narrow, wooden fishing vessel known as a pirogue – was carrying more than 100 people from the town, and it capsized after sailing only 4km (2.5 miles), state broadcaster Radio Television Senegalaise said.

In a move to prevent a national economic shutdown, the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) Managing Director, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, intervened to stop a planned strike by the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO) and other truck unions . At a meeting with truckers, represented by Executive Director Marine & Operations, Engr. Olalekan Badmus, Dantsoho appealed to the truckers, saying, “We will work with the Lagos State Government and police high command to address your concerns and prevent any shutdown. The national economy cannot afford it.”.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, says President Bola Tinubu’s administration is fully committed to maritime safety and modernisation of Nigeria’s ports infrastructure. Oyetola disclosed this in Lagos during his keynote address at the opening of the Lagos International Maritime Week and the 9th International Maritime Business-to-Business Conference and Exhibition. The theme of the conference is, “Navigating the Future of Africa’s Marine and Blue Economy – Safety First.”

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has commenced a major sensitization and enforcement drive for the Waterways Transportation Code in Lagos, a critical move aimed at improving safety and regulation on the state’s busy waterways. The NIWA Lagos Area Manager, Engr. Sarat Braimah launched the initiative at various jetties in Lagos to ensure that boat captains, operators, and passengers are fully-aware of the new safety measures now in place and the strict penalties for non-compliance.
