LASG Begins Implementation Of E-Call Up On Lekki -Epe Port Corridor

In a bid to avert severe congestion by articulated truck and improve the efficient logistics operations within the Lekki-Epe Free Trade Zone corridor, the Lagos State Government has announced the commencement of the e-call up system for managing truck movements within the axis from next week. The commencement date according to a statement signed by Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlolu, Deputy Director, Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Transport said was earlier extended on Stakeholders request to give adequate room for full compliance.

NIWA Vows to Address Indiscriminate Arrests of Boat Operators Over Fuel Purchases

The Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Engr. Sarat Braimah, has promised to address the ongoing issue of indiscriminate arrests of boat operators by the police, for purchasing fuel in jerry cans, which are often mistaken for involvement in smuggling or illegal bunkering activities. Shipping Position Daily recalls that as a result of the lingering fuel scarcity and the absence of floating fuel stations, boat operators have been forced to resort to buying fuel in generator tanks, to avoid being arrested by the Police, for allegedly engaging in illegal bunkering and smuggling.

Princess Vicky Haastrup, Chairman of the Seaport Terminal Operators Association of Nigeria, STOAN, has appealed to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, to use the 0.5% stevedoring levy remitted by terminal operators for the training of dockworkers. Haastrup emphasised that the levy is specifically designated for dockworkers training but expressed disappointment that NIMASA has not utilised the funds for this purpose, despite the significant resources available. She called on the agency to fulfil its responsibility and invest in the training of dockworkers.

APM Terminals Apapa Sees 25% Rise in Non-Oil Export Volumes

Nigeria’s largest container terminal, APM Terminals Apapa, has recorded a significant increase in non-oil export volumes, with a 25% year-on-year rise in the first half of 2024. The terminal’s H1 export figures for non-oil cargo stood at 51,000 TEUs, up from 47,000 TEUs in the same period last year. According to APM Terminals Apapa Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen, non-oil export cargo is a crucial part of the terminal’s business, with steady growth recorded over the last four years.
