The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) and the Ship Owners and Agents Association
of Ghana (SOAAG) have renewed calls for more transparent and deeper
engagement to strengthen the commercial shipping sector, enhance trade, and
create a more conducive business environment. At a meeting between the two
institutions, Professor Ransford Gyampo, Chief Executive Officer of the GSA,
stressed the importance of continuous dialogue and data sharing across all
maritime stakeholders, including shipping lines, port authorities, and government
agencies. “We must listen to each other more and find a middle ground to address
our challenges,” he stated. “The GSA’s role is not to take sides. We are referees in
this space, here to ensure fairness and protect the broader interest of Ghana’s
commercial shipping sector.” The engagement comes as Ghana’s shipping industry faces mounting pressures from rising operational costs, bureaucratic delays, and coordination challenges among multiple state agencies involved in port operations.

The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria Export Promotion Group (MANEG) has
called for a review of global trade barriers and protectionist policies that continue
to undermine Nigerian exporters under the African Continental Free Trade Area
(AfCFTA). The group made the appeal in Lagos during its 8th Annual General
Meeting (AGM). The theme of the AGM is “Difficulties in Export Trading under
Multilateral Trade Agreements: A Threat to AfCFTA Implementation”. Director-
General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Mr Segun Ajayi-Kadir,
said export remains the foundation of economic independence for any developing
nation. He urged the Federal Government to strengthen local production and refine export policies. Ajayi-Kadir noted that although Nigeria had launched several
economic recovery plans over the years, poor implementation had hindered
sustainable growth. “The early years of independence held great promise for our
economy, but successive governments have failed to implement key industrial
plans."

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to reduce physical examination of
containers at Nigeria’s ports by 90 per cent through the implementation of the
National Single Window (NSW) — a comprehensive digital platform aimed at
modernising and streamlining the nation’s import and export processes. Expected
to go live in the first quarter of 2026, the National Single Window will serve as a
centralised hub linking all government agencies involved in trade with importers,
exporters, freight forwarders, and other stakeholders. The platform is designed to
cut down delays, reduce logistics costs, and strengthen Nigeria’s competitiveness
in global trade through automation and transparency. Speaking at a Stakeholders’
Forum held in Lagos, the Director and Coordinator of the National Single Window
Project, Tola Fakolade, said the platform’s centralised risk management system
would drastically limit the need for physical checks, ensuring faster and more
efficient cargo clearance.
