Navy Rescues 59 Persons From Drowning, Loses Officer

The Nigerian Navy (NN) says its Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny, has rescued 59 persons from a dredging vessel, MV AMBIKA 4, working at Okpobo field near Okpobo River. This is contained in a statement by the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, in Abuja. Adams-Aliu said the navy lost an officer, Lt.-Commander Gideon Gwaza, in the operation, saying the area was known to be turbulent at this time of the year. He said that the dredging vessel was working at Okpobo field contracted to Sterling Global Oil Limited.

NIMASA DG Vows to Deploy Idle Floating Dock After Six Years

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said it is poised to operationalize its idle Modular Floating Dock, which was acquired more than six years ago at whopping sum of over N50 billion. NIMASA Director General Dayo Mobereola said the agency is carefully evaluating proposals to ensure a strategic and beneficial utilisation of the facility. This comes after a recent visit to the dock to assess its condition. Mobereola also revealed plans to disburse the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) to indigenous ship owners, enabling them to acquire vessels and tap into global opportunities. However, he emphasised the need for a strategic approach to ensure the vessels are utilised effectively and generate revenue..

In a ground-breaking achievement, PTML Nigeria, West Africa’s largest roll-on roll-off (Ro/Ro) multipurpose port terminal, has become a major strategic logistics hub for the trans-shipment of vehicle to Europe. PTML achieved the historic feat in July when it received a Grimaldi vessel named “Grande Houston”, which arrived at the Tin Can Island Port to trans-ship a staggering 5,489 new vehicles, loaded in China and destined for ports across Europe and Africa.

Nigeria Hands Over World Customs Organisation Vice-Chair To Mali

Nigeria on handed over the Vice-Chairmanship seat of the World Customs Organisation for the West Africa and Central Region to Mali. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the ceremony, held at the Nigeria Customs Service Headquarters in Abuja, saw Nigeria’s NCS boss, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, handing over to his Malian counterpart, Amadou Konate. In his remarks, Adeniyi thanked his counterparts in the region for their cooperation during his tenure, which commenced in May 2022.

NIMASA Petitions UN Over Imposition Of War Risk Freight Charges On Nigeria

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA has moved to reduce the high freight charges on Nigerian bound cargoes by the European Shipping community through a petition to the United Nations. The freight rates charged by European shipping community is made worse by the additional imposition of war risk insurance charges due to the to the increased piracy, in the Gulf of Guinea, GoG, a development that eased as a result of Nigeria’s intervention against the menace of pirate attacks on vessels on the Gulf of Guinea, strait.

Tariff Removal: FG Sets Duty Rate Guidelines For Staple Food

The Federal Government has unveiled guidelines for the implementation of the “Zero Percent Duty Rate and Value Added Tax” exemption on certain basic food items. The announcement is contained in a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Abdullahi Maiwada in Abuja. Maiwada said that President Bola Tinubu approved the guidelines through Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that on July 8, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, announced the suspension of duties, tariffs, and taxes on certain imported food items.
