Nigerian exporters have accused all seaport terminal operators, except APM Terminals Apapa, of deliberately sabotaging the shipment of export cargoes through their terminals with the imposition of undue storage charges and other levies. The exporters said the storage levy has increased the cost of cargo shipments, maintaining that it is a ploy by the terminal operators to sabotage the efforts of the Federal Government to boost the export of locally produced goods in the country. They added that multiple documentation in the port delays their cargoes unnecessarily causing the contents of the cargoes to lose their quality and values before shipment.

Following a lull in the economy, the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, has recorded a drop of 4.3 percent drop in the number ships that called at the nation’s seaports in the first half of the year 2024 as a total of 251 vessels called at the ports between January and June. This was contained in the report of the just concluded quarterly meeting of the Nigerian Port Consultative Council, NPCC, where it was also reported despite the drop in vessel calls, there was 6.9 percent increase in Gross Tonnage of ships completed was put at 32,614,191 metric tons in the period under review against 30,504, 276 in 2023.

The newly appointed Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has identified the speedy rehabilitation of dilapidated port infrastructure across the nation as his topmost priority. Dantsoho, who was speaking during an unscheduled visit to Tin Can Island Port (TCIP), also vowed to collaborate with port stakeholders in a bid to deliver efficient services at the nation’s seaports. According to the NPA helmsman, adequate port infrastructure and robust collaboration with stakeholders will enable the nation’s seaports attain improved revenue generation through efficiency and productivity.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) is collaborating with the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to check the proliferation of arms into the country. NCS, in a statement by Abdullahi Maiwada, its spokesman, said that the collaboration would also strengthen efforts to curb the flow of illicit drugs. He quoted NCS Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi as telling newsmen in the U.S. that the matter was discussed with CBP officials. He further quoted the NCS boss as saying that the NCS would share experiences with CBP to identify what works for each side. “We are conducting a needs assessment to determine our priorities. “The move is a demonstration of NCS’ resolve to enhance response to the increasing threat of gang sophistication,” he further quoted Adeniyi as saying.
