Trucks Transit Parks Limited (TTP) has said that reducing traffic congestion around Nigeria’s seaports is critical to achieving sustainable shipping operations, noting that efficient truck management contributes significantly to environmental protection and improved working conditions for dockworkers. The company made the assertion at the 2026 Dockworkers’ Day celebration organised by the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) in Lagos.

Nigeria has expressed readiness to leverage the €59 million West Africa Sustainable Ocean Programme (WASOP) as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing while strengthening sustainable management of its marine resources. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made this known in Abuja on Thursday during a meeting with the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, where both sides reaffirmed commitment to deepening cooperation on maritime security and sustainable ocean governance.

Chairman, SIFAX Group Dr Taiwo Afolabi, has called on the Federal Government to prioritise the rehabilitation and capacity expansion of Nigeria’s eastern ports in a bid to further stimulate economic activities in the axis and decongest the Lagos ports. Afolabi said this when he received the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Dr. Pius Akutah at the SIFAX Group’s head office in Lagos.

Togo's Minister Delegate for the Maritime Economy, Kokou Edem Tengue, used World Oceans Day on June 8 to highlight the outsized role of the sea in the country's economy and call for stronger efforts to protect marine resources.
"Nearly 70% of our economic activities depend on our maritime sector; more than 75% of our tax revenues come from it," Tengue said in a message to stakeholders. For the minister, protecting the ocean is as much an economic imperative as an environmental one. He described the Port of Lomé as "the lung of our economy and the link between West Africa and the world."
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced that the development work on Phase 2 of the Lekki Port project will commence soon, reinforcing the State’s ambition to deepen its position as West Africa’s leading maritime and logistics hub. Babajide Sanwo-Olu made this known at the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0 held on Tuesday, in Lagos. Speaking on the State’s infrastructure agenda, Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted Lagos’ strategic role in driving regional trade and economic integration, noting that the rapid growth of Lekki Deep Sea Port has necessitated plans for its next phase of development.

The International Ocean Institute Nigeria Centre (IOI-Nigeria) and the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research (NIOMR) have called for innovative, inclusive and sustainable approaches to ocean governance to drive economic growth and national development.
The organisations made the call on Tuesday at an event they organised to commemorate 2026 World Ocean Day which is observed annually on June 8
The Director of IOI-Nigeria, Mr Akanbi Williams, said Nigeria must move beyond traditional approaches and embrace sustainable pathways for ocean governance, conservation and ocean-based development.
