Nigeria’s maritime sector is on the verge of a sweeping transformation as the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) and the Admiralty University of Nigeria (ADUN) have formalized a historic technical partnership.
The alliance was unveiled during IMION’s maiden official visit to the ADUN campus in Ibusa, Delta State recently. Uniting two premier institutions rooted in the traditions of the Nigerian Navy, this collaboration directly bridges the chasm between academic theory and real-world maritime imperatives.
The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, says Nigeria’s maritime sector has undergone a far-reaching transformation in the three years since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu established the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in August 2023.
Oyetola said the Ministry had moved swiftly to unlock the economic potential of Nigeria’s 853-kilometre coastline and extensive inland waterways, positioning the marine and blue economy as a major driver of revenue, trade, security and job creation.

The struggle to make Nigeria’s inland waterways safer has taken a dangerous turn in Niger and Kwara States, where passengers resisting the enforcement of life-jacket rules have allegedly threatened officials with daggers.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Area Manager for Niger and Kwara, Mr. Akapo Adeboye, disclosed this in an interview with our correspondent, revealing that only about 40 per cent of waterway users in the two states currently comply with the compulsory use of life jackets.
The Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) FORMOSO in Bayelsa in collaboration with local security personnel arrested a wanted militant kingpin.
This is contained in a statement on Tuesday by the Base Information Officer, Sub-Lt. Japhet Dauda.
The arrest followed credible intelligence report regarding the continued movement and activities of the wanted suspect who had been on the run since the raid on his camp at Fununu Community, on Aug. 6,’ the navy said.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to revitalising Nigeria’s Eastern ports to reduce pressure on Lagos and achieve a more balanced port system.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, stated this in his keynote address at the League of Maritime Editor’s Annual General Meeting and Conference in Lagos, held under the theme “Lagos/Eastern Ports: How to Reverse Existing Imbalance in Disproportionate Cargo Vessel Calls.”

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, has announced enhanced enforcement of the statutory requirements for indigenous participation in Nigeria’s Cabotage trade and maritime activities.
This disclosure was contained in a marine notice issued pursuant to the Agency’s statutory mandate of implementing applicable laws including the NIMASA Act 2007 and the Coastal and Inland Shipping (Cabotage) Act 2003, in addition to the Cabotage regulations and implementing guidelines.
