The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone ‘A’ (FOU ‘A’), Ikeja-Lagos, has intercepted 220 consignments of prohibited and smuggled goods valued at N3,24billion while recovering back N729million revenue.
The seizures include 4,956 bags of foreign parboiled rice weighing 50kg each, equivalent to eight trailer loads; 12 foreign-used vehicles; 2,683 parcels of synthetic cannabis (Sativa) weighing 1,439.9kg; 49 parcels of Ghanaian Loud weighing 26.1kg; one parcel of crystal methamphetamine weighing 0.35kg; 13 parcels of granular cannabis weighing 1.35kg; 240,000 tablets of Tramadol; and 12,000 tablets of Hypnox.
Maritime stakeholders have stated that Nigeria’s marine insurance framework requires stronger institutional capacity, effective enforcement and industry-wide collaboration to deliver meaningful protection for cargo interests.
This was the focus of the 2026 Nigeria Marine Insurance Forum Virtual Summit organised by Akabogu & Associates, according to a statement obtained by The PUNCH.
The programme brought together maritime and insurance experts to examine the implications of the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 for insurers, shipping companies, cargo owners and other players across the logistics value chain.
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA) has introduced a new set of comprehensive standards for seafarers’ education, training, assessment and examination, certification, revaluation, endorsement, including medical fitness certification of seafarers and competency development as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s compliance with international maritime regulations and produce globally competitive seafarers.
The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), in collaboration with Parts Central Limited, is set to unveil a major inland waterways clean-up initiative aimed at tackling pollution, creating jobs and unlocking new opportunities within Nigeria’s blue economy.
The initiative will be officially unveiled on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at Bic Garden, Lagos, with government officials and stakeholders across the maritime and blue economy sectors expected to attend.
The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) says Nigeria’s Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has become the template for a 3.1 billion-dollar continental customs modernisation project.
The ICRC said this in a statement by Ifeanyi Nwoko, Acting Head of Media and Publicity, ICRC on Tuesday in Abuja.
Nwoko said the project was under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the Nigerian Ports Economic Regulatory Agency (NPERA) Bill, 2026, paving the way for the establishment of a dedicated economic regulator for Nigeria’s port sector.
The development was announced by the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr Pius Akutah, who took to his Facebook page to express appreciation to the President.
“Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Act, 2026. Thank you Mr. President for making it a reality,” Akutah stated in the terse post.
