Investigation by Shipping Position Daily has revealed that truckers and cargo owners operating along the Apapa and Tin Can port corridors may be losing over N85 billion annually to alleged extortion at no fewer than 34 checkpoints mounted by various government security and traffic agencies, a situation stakeholders say is significantly driving up logistics costs and the prices of imported goods in Nigeria.
The investigation found that truck drivers encounter more than 17 checkpoints on the Apapa corridor and another 16 along the Tin Can Port access road, where operators are allegedly compelled to make unofficial payments, with industry estimates showing that a single checkpoint alone could generate as much as N5.04 billion annually from trucks accessing the ports.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation (AALF) aimed at fostering leadership development, empowerment, community engagement, and sustainability among young Nigerians.
The partnership was formalized recently during a visit by representatives of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation to the LASWA headquarters, where both organizations explored areas of mutual interest and opportunities for collaboration.
Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, emphasized the importance of partnerships in driving innovation and sustainable development across various sectors of the economy through youth involvement
The Lekki Port Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mr. Anda Emmanuel, has described marine art as a gateway to unlocking opportunities within Nigeria’s maritime industry, urging children and youths in coastal communities to embrace creativity as a pathway to the blue economy and improved livelihoods.
Anda made the call while flagging off the maiden edition of the “Paint Your Coast” initiative at Akodo-Ise, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos. The programme, organised by the African Maritime Art Exhibition (AMAE) in collaboration with the National Gallery of Art (NGA), aims to promote ocean literacy, environmental stewardship and blue economy awareness among children and youths in coastal communities.

WACT-APM Terminals Nigeria has announced the appointment of Courage Obadagbonyi as Managing Director, effective 1st July succeeding Jeethu Jose.

A seasoned executive with over two decades of international experience, Courage Obadagbonyi has held leadership roles across finance, operations, and general management at leading global organizations including APM Terminals, General Electric, and Lafarge. Prior to this appointment, he served as Chief Financial Officer for the APM Terminals Nigeria cluster, with responsibility for financial strategy across Nigeria and San Pedro, Cote D’Ivoire.
The Federal Government of Nigeria, in collaboration with the Abuja Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Port State Control and the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, has launched a five-year regional capacity-building programme aimed at strengthening maritime safety, regulatory compliance and institutional effectiveness across West and Central Africa.
The initiative was unveiled at a high-level regional workshop held in Lagos on Monday, bringing together directors-general, chief executive officers, heads of maritime administrations and port state control authorities from across the Abuja MOU region.
The Federal Government on Monday approved N286bn for the procurement of pollution control, pilot-transfer and firefighting vessels for Nigeria’s ports.
The approval followed the Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.
Speaking after the meeting, on behalf of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, said the council approved four separate memos for the procurement of specialised maritime vessels totalling N286bn.
