Delay in port modernisation project could cost Nigeria N1 trillion

The failure to implement the port modernisation project, after missing the first quarter deadline in 2024, could result in Nigeria losing another N1 trillion dollars due to the annual diversion of cargo to neighbouring countries. The Nigerian

Ports Authority (NPA) announced last year that the project would start in the first quarter of 2024, despite efforts to secure a $1.1 billion financial model to boost the initiative. In the 2024 budget, the Federal Government allocated N150 million ($101,011.72 against N1482.72/$) to the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy for the implementation of the port modernisation programme.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Comptroller General, Adewale Adeniyi, said its revenue increased by 74 per cent to N4.49tn between June 2023 and May 2024, when compared to what the service collected during the same period in the previous year. Adeniyi, while presenting his scorecard of one year in office in Abuja, said, “Exactly one year ago today, and approximately three weeks into the

inauguration of President Bola Tinubu, I was appointed by Mr President as the Comptroller General of this strategic agency, the NCS.”

Stakeholders Worry Over New NMDPRA $2,000 Registration Fee

Maritime stakeholders have expressed concern over the newly imposed $2,000 registration fee on indigenous shipowners by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority. The former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Temisan Omatseye, while speaking in Lagos recently at the 2024 Stakeholders Engagement, lamented over the two licensing fees indigenous shipowners were mandated by NMDPRANMDPRA. “NMDPRA is insisting on one licence where each shipowner pays $2,000 to register and now, they are asking for another N2m. There are two licences now, which they call coastal licenses. They have now even issued a regulation in line with the Petroleum Industry Act, which gave them that power,” he said.
