Reps Probe Contracts For Dredging Of Calabar Port

The House of Representatives has mandated its Committee on Ports and Harbour to investigate the contracts for the dredging of the Calabar seaport in Cross River State awarded in 2006 and 2014. The committee is to determine why the contracts were abandoned by the contractors and report within four weeks for further legislative action. The Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy was also urged by the House to re-award the dredging of the port to a reputable company with a mandate to complete the project within a specific time frame.

The Federal Government said it has initiated plans to construct a rail line to link Badagry to Tin-Can Island Port and Tin-Island to Lagos Port Complex Apapa. The Minister of Transportation, said Alkali, who disclosed this, said the proposed rail line will also link Lekki to Ijebu Ode, and Ijebu Ode to Kajola which will connect the route from Lagos to Kano and Kano to Maradi. He said this while flagging off a

narrow gauge freight train service from Dala Inland Dry port in Kano to the Lagos Port Complex Apapa. Alkali, said the development of a modern, safe, secure, and sustainable transportation network was a priority of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

the Maritime Anti-Corruption Network, MACN, have commenced moves to eliminate unethical practices and raise the integrity of officers involved in the implementation of PSC. Speaking at the opening of a two-day training

programme for officers of PSC, Secretary General of the Abuja MoU, Capt. Sunday Umoren said that there is a need to understand the mandate which according to him, is to rid the world of substandard ships.

FG Sets To Increase Nation`s Navigable Waterways – Oyetola

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola says the Federal Government will increase the three thousand kilometres navigable waterways across the nation to five thousand kilometres. Oyetola made the assertion in Lokoja, Kogi state during his working visit to the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the inauguration of projects embarked upon by the management of the authority. According to him, elongating waterways will

advance the effectiveness and efficiency of navigation on waterways for the passage of goods and people. “I am aware that of the 10, 000 kilometres of our waterways, only 3,000 kilometres are navigable. We are determined to increase

them by at least 2,000 kilometres more."

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in conjunction with the World Bank and the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, convened with maritime stakeholders,

regulatory and security agencies to identify bottlenecks hindering trade facilitation and provide a holistic approach to addressing them. The World Bank team led by Aleksandar Stojanov and delegates from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment were in Apapa, Lagos State, recently to study operations at the port and inspection processes.
