APM Terminals Apapa in collaboration with NPA has successfully completed its quay apron area repair project — a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at improving operational safety, sustainability, and efficiency at Nigeria’s busiest container terminal. In a statement signed by the Terminal Manager, Steen Knudsen, the project was said to have been delivered within the stipulated timeline through the deployment of appropriate equipment and a dedicated workforce. Knudsen said, “The quay apron, one of the most operationally sensitive and high-risk zones within the terminal, posed substantial challenges. Executing extensive repairs in this area without disrupting daily terminal operations required
precision planning and exceptional coordination.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has expressed commitment to facilitating the importation of renewable energy technologies into the country. The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adeniyi, made this statement at the NCS Trade Facilitation Consultative Forum held in Lagos. The theme of the forum is “Trade Facilitation Measures for Renewable Energy and Energy-Efficient Technologies”. Adeniyi, represented by the Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs on Tariff and Trade Facilitation, Caroline Niagwan, said the commit. He said this was with a view to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Customs efforts to renewable energy primarily involve regulating import of essential equipment like solar panels ensuring duty-free and VAT-free classification to support the development of the sector.

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, and the Tanzanian counterpart, the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation, TASAC, have deepened cooperation in knowledge sharing in the areas of Flag and Port State Control, Seafarer Development and Certification, Cabotage regime implementation, Maritime Security, and digital transformation of processes among others. This was the thrust of deliberations during a working visit by the Maritime Administration of the East African nation to NIMASA led by Rukia D Shante, Vice Chairman, TASAC who also announced the support of the Tanzanian Government for Nigeria’s bid to seek election into Category C at the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council. The Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, described the relationship as mutually beneficial as it would serve as a foundation for a strategic long-term collaboration between Nigeria and Tanzania.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Customs Administration of Benin Republic inaugurated an Interconnected System for Management of Goods in Transit (SIGMAT) platform, aimed at boosting regional trade. Mr Adewale Adeniyi, Comptroller General of Customs (CGC) and the Director General of Benin Customs Administration, Mme Adidjath Hassan Zanouvii, unveiled the system at a news conference held at the Seme-Krake Joint Border Post. Speaking during the inauguration, Adeniyi said the platform was designed to remove some of the challenges faced by operators. According to him, the system is resilient and will eliminate bottlenecks linked to international trade. It has worked effectively in seven other countries. He expressed optimism about the platform’s success, saying
that officers from the service had been trained to manage the platform with support from critical stakeholders.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, received the Ambassador of France to Nigeria, His Excellency Marc Fonbaustier, in his office in Abuja in a visit that underscored the deepening maritime and diplomatic relations between both countries. The engagement came as Nigeria intensifies its campaign for election into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, an ambition the Minister firmly anchored during the meeting. CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Limited has announced the removal of the controversial container deposit requirement, which its parent company and French shipping giant; CMACGM recently slammed on all cargoes designed for Nigeria. The fresh charge was a $100 surcharge on twenty-foot equivalent units of Nigeria-bound container cargoes. However, the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has acknowledged the decision of CMA CGM Nigeria Shipping Limited to officially remove the container deposit requirement for all new bookings effective 21st May 2025. In a statement issued, the NSC attributed the development to sustained stakeholder engagements and is a significant step toward promoting a more efficient, customer-friendly shipping environment in Nigeria. The NSC commends
this initiative and views it as a milestone in ongoing efforts to reduce trade barriers, enhance compliance, and boost competitiveness at Nigerian ports.
