Nigeria Customs Service Launches Electronic Currency Declaration at Abuja Airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has achieved a major milestone in its digital transformation journey with the successful pilot deployment of the Electronic Currency Declaration Form (e-CDF) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The initiative, which commenced on 9 April 2025, represents a significant step forward in the Service’s ongoing modernisation efforts aimed at bolstering border security, enhancing transparency in financial disclosures, and aligning with global best practices in anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT) measures. Customs National Public Relations Officer, Assistant Comptroller Abdullahi Maiwada, said in a press statement that during the pilot phase, the e-CDF platform recorded a total of 69 currency declaration transactions.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has concluded plans to establish a dedicated Customs Area Command at the Snake Island Integrated Free Zone (SIIFZ), in a bid to strengthen its operational and regulatory presence at the facility. During a recent visit to Snake Island, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, announced that the Service is in the final stages of documentation to formalize the

creation of a new command at SIIFZ and Nigerdock, acknowledging the significant level of investment made by the company on the Island. “We are just at the stage where we are finalising all the documentation, and I am very sure that by the next time I visit this place, I’ll be received by a Customs Area Controller,” Adeniyi stated.

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has announced the successful commencement of a pilot phase for processing Form M through its homegrown B’Odogwu Unified Customs Management System, marking a significant milestone in the digital transformation of Nigeria’s trade facilitation framework. The move is seen as a major stride toward streamlining customs documentation, boosting efficiency, and reinforcing transparency across the country’s import export value chain. A statement by the National Public Relations Officer of Customs, Abdullahi Maiwada, said the pilot, which was carried out in PTML, Tin Can Island Port, and Apapa Area Command, demonstrated the system’s capacity to handle end-to-end trade documentation.

Ahead of the anticipated disbursement of the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF), indigenous shipowners have raised concerns over the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency’s (NIMASA) failure to release the fund’s operational guidelines. Speaking to Journalists in Lagos ahead of a scheduled stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos, the President of the Nigerian Indigenous Shipowners Association (NISA), Otunba Sola Adewumi, emphasized that such guidelines should have been shared with local maritime operators well in advance to ensure transparency and preparedness. Adewumi also said that the agency has had a number of engagements with shipowners before now but the issue of the guidelines regarding the Fund was never raised.

Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), has tasked the Lekki Deep Sea Port to adopt advanced technological innovations to enhance its competitiveness. This charge was given by the Council’s Executive Secretary; Dr. Akutah Pius, during a meeting with the Lekki Port management team at the NSC headquarters in Lagos Dr. Akutah described the Lekki Port as a modern, world-class facility that should set the standard for excellence in shipping operations in Nigeria and the region. He reaffirmed the NSC’s commitment to promoting investment predictability and ensuring the long-term sustainability and profitability of investments in the sector. While speaking, the Managing Director of Lekki Port, Mr. Wang Qiang, highlighted the port’s status as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project, emphasizing the need for investor collaboration to drive its sustainability.

Customs Target Two-Hour Cargo Clearance At Tincan Island

The Nigeria Customs Service, Tincan Island Command, said that the full implementation of the B’Odogwu System at the command will reduce cargo clearance to about two hours. Speaking with some journalists at the command, the Customs Area Controller of the command, Frank Onyeka, said the application is glitch-free, hence would ease the difficulties in cargo clearance and facilitate trade. Onyeka urged importers and clearing agents to always be honest with their declarations. “When B’Odogwu comes to Tincan and you declare appropriately, you can move your goods in two hours. Because B’Odogwu is ours, B’Odogwu is fresh, B’Odogwu is network glitch-free,” Onyeka said. The CAC mentioned that the command is already engaging in massive sensitisation of stakeholders and training of appropriate personnel.
