As Nigeria intensifies efforts to attract more foreign exchange into the economy, trade experts have called for an increase in the ratio of exporters to importers, as well as the provision of single-digit interest rates for exporters to boost local production. Speaking during a town hall meeting organized by the Bankers’ Committee in Lagos recently, Bamidele Ayemibo, lead consultant at 3T Impex Consulting, stressed the necessity of significantly improving the number of exporters in Nigeria. According to him, “My recommendation is that we must urgently work towards increasing the number of exporters in Nigeria. The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has confirmed that we currently have only about 1,200 exporters.

Following the successful rollout of its Unified Customs Management System (UCMS), codenamed B’odogwu, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has ramped up strategic engagements with key stakeholders to reinforce progress and promote full-scale system integration. In a virtual meeting held earlier in the week, the management of Customs Service engaged officials of Access Bank to align operational frameworks and deepen collaboration in support of trade facilitation and financial system integration. Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Comptroller-General of Customs in charge of ICT and Modernisation, Kikelomo Adeola, reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to seamless stakeholder integration in the post-deployment consolidation phase.

The Onne Multipurpose Terminal in Rivers State has successfully hosted a 6,606-foot equivalent unit vessel named Kota Carum. The terminal operator announced this in a statement It added that the vessel is the largest ever to berth at the Onne Federal Ocean Terminal. It said the milestone event further underscored OMT’s growing prominence as a hub for large-scale maritime trade in West Africa. According to the statement, flying the Singaporean flag, the vessel is owned by Pacific International Lines, one of Asia’s leading shipping companies. “The mega container vessel, measuring an impressive 301.43 meters in length overall, arrived at the OMT jetty utilising berths 9 and 10. Boasting a capacity of 6,606 TEUs, Kota Carum is a major addition to the line of large vessels now calling at Onne Port.

Barring any last minute change, indigenous shipowners will gain access to the long-awaited Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF) within the next three to four months, the Director General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola has said. The NIMASA DG announced this development during an oversight visit by the House Committee on Maritime Safety, Education and Administration in Lagos. Dr. Mobereola stated that the agency has received approval from the Minister of Marine & Blue Economy to streamline the disbursement guidelines for the fund to expedite the process. Mobereola disclosed that NIMASA has also expanded the number of Primary Lending Institutions (PLIs) from the initial five to twelve including Polaris, Zenith, Union, Jaiz, and UBA banks, along with seven additional institutions to facilitate access to the fund.

Determined to sustainably improve efficiencies in port operations and service delivery, the Federal Government (FG) through the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) is set to inaugurate the Ports and Customs Efficiency Committee (PCEC). The inauguration which is scheduled to take place at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) headquarters in Lagos is to be chaired by the Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Ibrahim Kashim Shettima, and comprises of over 50 heads of Government agencies and private sector captains of industries cutting across the entire gamut of value chains that contribute significantly to Nigeria’s economic growth.

Comptroller Mohammed Shuaibu has taken over as the 28th Controller of the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone A , Ikeja Lagos,. Speaking at the brief handing- over ceremony that took place at the conference hall of the Unit yesterday, the new helmsman promised to deploy his wealth of experience to navigate the complexities of the Unit. Comptroller Shuaibu solicited the support and maximum cooperation of the officers and men of the Unit to deliver on the mandates of the Service. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the service’s seven 7 Golden Rules (7Cs) to always guide the actions and decisions of officers. The new Comptroller expressed gratitude to the Almighty Allah and the Comptroller General of Customs ( CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for the opportunity to serve as comptroller FOU A. He expressed optimism that the unit will excel in its mandates.
