The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport, Nigeria, has expressed concern over the frequent loss of lives associated with passenger ferries in the country’s coastal and inland waterways. The President of CILT, Mrs Mfon Usoro, said this in a statement in Lagos. Usoro said the incessant ferry ferry-related incidents resulting in fatalities were becoming worrisome to the association. She said the association supports the use of inland waterways transport as an alternative and viable mode of transportation.

The National Council of Managing Directors of Licensed Customs Agents (NCMDLCA) has voiced its deep sorrow over the recent fire incident on Onne Road IN Rivers state. This is even as it issued a call to the Federal Government to urgently
enhance the safety of the highly highly-busy road, following a devastating fire that caused significant property loss and impacted the daily operations of freight forwarders on this critical port access route. An official statement signed by the

Despite spending more than N16 billion on training of over 2000 Seafarers over the years, under the National Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) sponsored by the Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) has raised concerns over the whereabouts of Nigerian seafarer s who were trained under the NSDP. This is even as it raised concerns about the quality of certified seafarers in Nigeria and other African countries.

Danish shipping and logistics company, A.P Moller Moller-Maersk, has said that it would invest additional $600 million to expand existing port infrastructure to accommodate more container shipping services in Nigerian ports. This followed
closed-door talks between President Bola Tinubu and the company’s Chairman, Mr Robert Maersk Uggla on the sideline of the World Economic Forum Special Meeting o on Global Collaboration, Growth and Energy for Development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Maersk CEO said the fresh investment is in addition to existing investments of over $2 billion in Nigerian ports and other activities activities.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have resolved to replicate 24 hours port operations at all seaports nationwide following the successes recorded by the pilot programme at Tin Can Island Port (TCIP). In other to attain this, Customs officials as well as other port operators may be assigned shifts as the nation’s seaports moves into an era of full full-scale 24 hours port operations. The Customs Area Controller of TCIP Command, Comptroller Dera Nnadi, while addressing the Command officers during a parade, commended the Command’s officers for their good performance in the first quarter of 2024 .

The Chief Executive Officer of APM Terminals, Keith Svendsen has reiterated plans to invest more than USD500 million in Nigerian ports. Svendsen reiterated this
commitment in a statement. He said APM Terminals has intensified talks with the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to concertize the investment plan. He said he is pleased with the significant progress made towards implementation of the plan.
