Switzerland Pledges Support for Nigeria’s Bid for IMO Category C Seat

The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has received a letter of support from the Swiss government for Nigeria’s bid for the Category ‘C’ seat on the Council of the International Maritime Organization, IMO, for the 2026/2027 Biennium elections October/November this year. The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, received the letter of endorsement in his Office during a courtesy visit from Switzerland’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Patrick Felix Egloff marking a significant step forward for Nigeria’s campaign.

CMA CGM Imposes Fresh $500 Per Container Surcharge on Nigeria, Other West African Ports

French shipping giant CMA CGM has announced a new peak season surcharge (PSS) on cargo bound for Nigerian and other West African ports, intensifying concerns among shippers and importers already grappling with high freight costs and logistical challenges in the region. The surcharge, which takes effect from 15 September 2025 and will remain in place until further notice, applies to both dry and reefer cargo shipped from North East Asia, South East Asia, China, and Hong Kong & Macau SAR. CMA CGM said the levy would be fixed at US$500 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) and will apply specifically to short-term contracts.

Oyetola Vows Action Against Illegal Fishing, Assures Stakeholders

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, has expressed concern over the growing menace of Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, vowing that Nigeria will work with regional and international partners to curb the practice. The Minister made this known on Monday, 1st September 2025, when he received the Chairman and the Secretary-General of the Fisheries Committee for the West Central Gulf of Guinea (FCWC), who were on a working visit to his office in Abuja. Oyetola described IUU fishing as a grave violation of both national and international laws, noting that such activities are either unreported to authorities or conducted in ways that undermine established conservation and management measures for fish stocks.

Train Derailment: NRC Sets Up Incident Desk To Handle Enquiries

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has set up an incident desk to

handle enquiries and provide regular updates on the derailed Abuja- Kaduna Train Service (AKTS). The Managing Director of NRC, Dr Kayode Opeifa, said this in a statement in Lagos. Opeifa noted that the regular update would be achieved through dedicated phone lines: Queen 0703 645 2228, Lilian 0703 199 3211, and Abubakar – 0803 659 3212. He noted that so far, the corporation had been

able to reach 510 out of the 583 passengers listed on the train manifest.

NIMASA alerts on piracy attempt in Lome

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency said it has received an alert from the Maritime Domain Awareness for Trade Gulf of Guinea Watchkeepers regarding an attempted boarding of the Malta-flagged chemical tanker, Endo Ponente, at position 05°10’N, 001°23’E, close to Lome Port, Togo. NIMASA announced this in a statement by its Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, who explained that intelligence gathered from NIMASA’s C4i Centre later placed the vessel at 04°19’16” N, 01°35’59” E, within Ghana’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

IMO Secretary-General to Visit Nigeria in October

The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, is set to undertake a three-day working visit to Nigeria from 2 to 4 October 2025. The disclosure was made by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Dayo Mobereola, during a courtesy visit to the agency’s headquarters by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen. Mobereola commended the FOC for sustaining the longstanding and productive collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and NIMASA, describing it as a model for maritime sector development.
