APM Terminals joined key industry leaders and government stakeholders at the Decarbonizing Infrastructure in Nigeria Summit where it presented a white paper on container transport electrification to Vice President Kashim Shettima titled: ‘A pragmatic roadmap to unlock transformational benefits well beyond decarbonisation.’ Organised by the office of the Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, at the State House, Presidential Villa, the summit, themed “Unlocking Climate Finance for Sustainable Development,” convened decision-makers, private sector players, and development partners to accelerate efforts toward low-carbon infrastructure and green investment in Nigeria.APM Terminals underscores Nigeria’s opportunity to leapfrog fossil-powered logistics by electrifying its containerised trade, potentially unlocking $830 million in investments by 2030, creating skilled jobs, reducing 390 ktCO₂e emissions, and improving power reliability and public health.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has emphasised the urgent need for modern and sustainable infrastructure as the foundation for transforming Nigeria’s maritime sector into a key driver of national development. Speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the 7th edition of the Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime (TAAM) Conference held at the University of Lagos, Oyetola described Nigeria’s blue economy as a “sleeping giant” with immense, yet largely untapped, potential. “Nigeria’s blue economy is a sleeping giant,” the Minister, represented by the Director of Maritime Services, Mercy Ilori, said. “We have untapped potential along our vast coastline that, if harnessed responsibly, can create new jobs, strengthen our ports, attract investments, and safeguard our environment for future generations. “Infrastructure is at the heart of this transformation..”

In a determined push to strengthen Nigeria’s presence on the global maritime stage, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has intensified a wide-reaching diplomatic campaign to secure Nigeria’s election into Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council. Oyetola, who formally flagged off Nigeria’s campaign at the IMO Headquarters in London, 18 June 2025, has since embarked on a vigorous series of high-level bilateral engagements. Since this week, the Minister has been meeting with representatives of key maritime nations in what has been described as “door-to-door diplomacy” aimed at winning critical support ahead of the upcoming elections. Speaking to delegates on the sidelines of the ongoing 134th Session of the IMO Council in London, the Minister said: “Nigeria is not just seeking a seat; we are offering partnership, commitment, and leadership. We come to the IMO table with a strong track record in maritime security, a vast coastline brimming with potential, and a renewed national agenda anchored on collaboration and sustainability.”

Lekki port, Nigeria’s first deep seaport said it is firmly on track to become a dominant gateway for Nigerian cargo and a maritime hub for West Africa by 2028. This goal is fuelled by significant growth in cargo volumes and plans to expand both international and local transhipmement activities. Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Lekki Port, Daniel Odibe, who disclosed this at a media parley in Lagos said the port has already commenced international transhipmement operations to neighboring West African countries such as Ghana, Togo, Abidjan, and Cotonou, with plans to expand to other African countries. He said the port is also pushing to expand local transhipmement, aiming to serve other Nigerian ports. He said, “When you make a comparison of our projections, all things being equal, we see ourselves as a major gateway for Nigerian cargo and maritime hub for West Africa come 2028.

The first ever Nigerian owned container vessel, ‘M.V. Ocean Dragon’ yesterday arrived the Tin-Can Island port with over 350 containers on board her. Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President of Clarion Shipping Mrs. Bernadine Eloka said that the vessel is a long-term plan that has materialized with the support of the stakeholders like the Banks and agencies of government. Eloka also said that the vessel has come to proffer solutions to Nigerian importers and exporters who have difficulties in moving their containerized cargoes within the country and the West African sub-region. She disclosed that the vessel has capacity for 349 Twenty Equivalent Units, TEUs and can help lessen the problems of container movement within Nigeria as against trucking such containerized cargoes to other parts of the country. She said: “Other than operating in Nigerian coastal waters, the vessel is also meant to service West African countries like Cotonou, Lome, Ghana, Sierra Leone and it can go as far as Egypt and South Africa.

Stakeholders in the transportation sector have called on the Federal Government to link the Warri-Itakpe standard gauge rail line to inland ports and road networks to create seamless multimodal transport system. They made the call while responding to a national survey conducted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on the state of railway lines in the country. Inaugurated for commercial operation in Sept. 2020, after more than three decades delay, the 326km Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri standard gauge rail line currently connects Warri in Delta State to Itakpe in Kogi State. The rail line was originally designed to transport iron ore and coal from Itakpe to Ajaokuta Steel Mill and Aladja Steel Rolling Mills in Delta. Since it’s inauguration, the rail line has facilitated the movement of goods and passengers between the southern and northern parts of Nigeria. Speaking with NAN in Lokoja, Mr Shittu Adams, a retired Director in Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), said the railway line should be integrated with existing waterway and road networks…..
